Is AI Representing Your Business Accurately?

Right now, potential customers are asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI who to call about the problem you solve. AI is constructing an answer. Five conditions determine whether your business is in it — or not.

The Sales Conversation You Don't Know Is Happening

Every day, B2B buyers use AI assistants to research vendors, compare options, and form shortlists — before they speak to a single salesperson.

Research from 6sense found that 94% of buying groups rank their preferred vendor before their first sales contact. A 2026 Gartner survey found 45% of B2B buyers used AI during a recent purchase.

By the time your prospect reaches out, a decision may already be forming. And that decision is being shaped by whatever AI can find, understand, and verify about your business right now.

The question is not whether AI is representing your company.

It is whether it is representing you accurately, credibly, and compellingly — or leaving you out entirely.

THE FIVE CONDITIONS SECTION

Five Conditions. One Chain. Any Break Costs You the Customer.

AI doesn't recommend businesses at random. It follows a logic. Your business needs to satisfy five connected conditions before AI will confidently include you in a relevant answer.

? FINDABLE

Can AI discover and access your information?

If AI crawlers can't reach your content — because of technical blocks, missing submissions, or absence from the platforms AI draws from — nothing else on this list matters. You don't exist in the conversation.

What this requires:

  • Clean technical infrastructure (robots.txt, sitemap, crawlability)

  • Presence across the sources AI indexes: your website, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, industry directories, review platforms

  • llms.txt and proper AI crawler permissions

  • Consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) across all platforms

The test: Open ChatGPT and search for your business by name. Does it find you?

? UNDERSTANDABLE

Can AI determine precisely what you sell, who you serve, and what makes you different?

Being found is not the same as being understood. AI needs structured, explicit signals — not marketing copy written for humans who can infer meaning from context.

What this requires:

  • JSON-LD schema markup (Organisation, Person, Service, Product nodes)

  • Content that directly and clearly answers the questions your customers ask

  • Entity signals that connect your brand to your category, your people, and your expertise

  • Zero ambiguity about who your business is for and what it does

The test: Strip your website of all design. Read only the words and the underlying code. Would AI know exactly what you do?

? VERIFIABLE

Can AI confirm your claims through credible, independent sources?

AI applies trust logic before it recommends. It looks for external evidence that validates what your business claims about itself. Without it, your claims carry less weight than a competitor with modest positioning but strong third-party proof.

What this requires:

  • Reviews on platforms AI trusts (Google, Trustpilot, industry-specific review sites)

  • Named mentions in publications, articles, and industry content

  • Verified credentials and public profiles for your key people

  • Case studies with specific, measurable outcomes

  • Backlinks and citations from authoritative external domains

The test: Search for your business name alongside your key service claim. What independent evidence appears?

? RECOMMENDABLE

Is there enough credible, relevant content for AI to match you to a specific customer's question?

Verification tells AI you are trustworthy. Recommendability tells AI when to recommend you. This requires topical authority — a body of structured content that demonstrates you are the right answer for a specific type of problem.

What this requires:

  • FAQ and Q&A content mapped to the exact questions your customers ask AI

  • Pillar content and content clusters that establish authority in your category

  • Long-form articles and guides that AI can draw from when constructing answers

  • Your name appearing in external conversations about your category

The test: Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity the question your ideal customer would ask when looking for someone like you. Do you appear?

? ACTIONABLE

Once AI recommends you, can the customer easily take the next step?

AI delivers the referral. Your infrastructure converts it. A buyer arriving from an AI recommendation may already be pre-qualified and close to a decision. If the next step is unclear, slow, or broken — the lead is lost regardless of everything you did right to earn it.

What this requires:

  • Clear, frictionless calls to action on every relevant page

  • Contact and booking processes that work on any device

  • Fast response to enquiries — AI-referred buyers often have high intent and short patience

  • A first conversation that matches the expectations AI has set

The test: Ask someone unfamiliar with your business to visit your site and complete an enquiry. How long does it take? Where do they get stuck?

DIAGNOSTIC SECTION

Where Does Your Business Stand Across the Five Conditions?

Most businesses fail at Condition 2 or 3 — they can be found, but AI can't understand them clearly enough to verify or recommend them.

Here's a rough self-assessment:

SOUTH AFRICA CONTEXT SECTION

The Local Opportunity Is Still Open — But Not for Long

In our June 2026 audit of 13 Johannesburg SME websites across seven industries, zero out of thirteen had any schema markup implemented.

Not one business had given AI the structured signals it needs to understand and recommend them accurately.

This is the state of the local GEO landscape right now. It means:

  • Your competitors are almost certainly invisible to AI in the same way you may be

  • The businesses that establish AI visibility now will hold those positions for years

  • The window to move first in your category is open — but it is closing

The analogy is accurate: this is 2010 for SEO. The early movers owned their categories for a decade. The late movers spent that decade trying to catch up.

Frequently asked questions

1 How do I know if AI is already saying something wrong about my business?

The fastest way is to search for your business directly on ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google Gemini — both by name and by the category you operate in. Look for inaccuracies, outdated information, missing services, or absence from category searches. Our free AI Visibility Checker walks you through this systematically across five platforms and scores the results.

2 How long does it take to fix AI representation problems?

The foundational fixes — structured data implementation, entity signals, profile consistency — can be completed within two to four weeks and begin influencing AI outputs within one to three months. Topical authority and verifiability (reviews, citations, third-party mentions) take longer to build and compound over time. There is no shortcut that produces overnight results, but there is a clear sequence of actions that produces measurable improvement within a quarter.

3 Do I need a completely new website to fix this?

In most cases, no. The majority of AI visibility improvements are made at the technical layer (schema markup, structured data, crawl configuration) and the content layer (FAQ content, structured articles, entity-clear copy) — not through redesigning your website from scratch. Existing websites can be updated systematically without rebuilding them. The exception is if your site has deep technical problems that are preventing AI crawlers from accessing your content at all.

4 Is this the same as SEO, or something different?

Related but distinct. Traditional SEO optimises your pages to rank in Google's blue-link results. GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) optimise your business to be cited and recommended by AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode. SEO is a necessary foundation — AI engines still draw heavily from search-indexed content — but SEO alone does not guarantee AI visibility. The additional layer requires structured data, topical authority content, and verifiability signals that traditional SEO does not address.

5 Which AI platforms matter most for my business?

For B2B businesses, the priority order is: ChatGPT (dominant by volume — roughly 78% of AI chatbot market share), Google AI Overviews (2.5 billion monthly users, built into standard Google searches), Perplexity (growing fast among professional and research-led buyers), Microsoft Copilot (significant in enterprise and Microsoft 365 environments), and Google Gemini. Each platform constructs answers differently and cites different sources, so visibility on one does not guarantee visibility on others. Our AI Visibility Checker tests all five.
