How to Market on Reddit Without Getting Banned
Reddit is the platform businesses most often get removed from, usually for something they did not know was against the rules. It is also increasingly the platform whose threads get surfaced in AI assistants and rank in Google for exactly the comparison and recommendation questions your buyers ask. The problem is that nearly every Reddit marketing guide repeats a rule that is no longer in Reddit's policy. This guide is built on what Reddit currently documents and on how subreddit rules actually work.
- 1
Read what Reddit's spam policy actually says
Reddit defines spam as repeated or unsolicited actions, automated or manual, that negatively affect redditors, communities, or Reddit itself. Note what is not in that definition: promotion. Promotional content is not automatically spam under site-wide policy. What gets you removed is the pattern — mass-posting repetitive content for exposure or financial gain, mass-messaging, or running multiple accounts to inflate anything.
- 2
Stop relying on the 90/10 rule
The widely-quoted 9:1 or 90/10 ratio is not in Reddit's current site-wide policy. It comes from a retired reddiquette page and is still repeated across marketing blogs as though it were binding. What Reddit does say is that if your contributions consist primarily of links to a business you run or benefit from, you should be thoughtful about frequency or use the self-serve ads platform. A ratio is a useful private discipline; it is not a permission slip.
- 3
Treat subreddit rules as the rules that actually bind you
Reddit is explicit that community moderators adjudicate what counts as unwanted or spammy content in their communities. Before posting anywhere, read the sidebar rules and the community wiki. Tolerance varies enormously: some marketing and startup subreddits operate a zero-tolerance self-promotion policy with a permanent ban attached, while others run a designated weekly thread where promotion is welcome.
- 4
Build one real account rather than a brand burner
Reddit's own guidance is to post authentic content into communities where you have a personal interest. Use a single, named account that participates in things you genuinely care about alongside your professional subreddits. An account with a six-month history of ordinary comments reads completely differently to moderators and automod than one created last week whose entire history is your product.
- 5
Find conversations instead of creating them
The highest-value and lowest-risk Reddit activity is answering a question someone already asked. Search Reddit for the problems your product solves, sort by recent, and write a genuinely useful answer. Mention your company only where it is directly relevant to the question, and never as the whole answer. This is also the activity most likely to end up cited when someone later asks an AI assistant the same question.
- 6
Use the designated promotion threads
Many of the subreddits that ban standalone promotional posts run a recurring thread specifically for it — variations on Marketing Monday, Share Your SaaS, or Promote Your Business. These threads exist precisely so that moderators can keep the main feed clean. Posting in them is explicitly permitted and carries no ban risk, which makes them the correct first move in any new community.
- 7
Disclose your affiliation every single time
If you are recommending something you own, work for, or benefit from, say so in the comment itself. Undisclosed promotion is the fastest route to a ban and, worse, to a public accusation thread. A one-line disclosure costs nothing and Reddit users respond to it far better than most marketers expect.
- 8
Message the moderators before anything large
Before an AMA, a large post, a survey, or anything involving a link to your own research, message the mods and describe your angle. They will often tell you how to make it land, or flair it for you. This single habit converts moderators from a risk into an ally, and it is free.
- 9
Measure the right things
Reddit will not send you a traffic spike, and upvotes are not the goal. Track branded search volume, direct traffic, and whether your company starts appearing in AI assistant answers to the questions you have been answering on Reddit. Reddit threads are heavily indexed and heavily drawn on by AI systems, so the payoff is usually indirect and delayed.
Pro tips
- Never ask colleagues to upvote your posts and never run a second account to support your first. Vote manipulation and multiple-account use are among the few things Reddit enforces at the site level, and enforcement usually ends in a permanent ban.
- Reddit's spam policy and the community rules of individual subreddits are different documents with different enforcers. You can be fully compliant with the first and still be permanently banned under the second.
