How to Run a GEO Website Audit
Before spending on GEO implementation, it's worth understanding exactly where your site currently stands. This audit framework covers the same categories a professional GEO audit checks, so you can honestly assess your starting point.
- 1
Test your entity clarity
Ask an AI assistant "what is [your business name]?" and "what does [your business] do?" in a fresh session. Note whether the answer is accurate, vague, or wrong entirely.
- 2
Audit your schema coverage
Check your homepage, service pages and key content for Organization, Service, FAQPage and Article structured data using the Rich Results Test; note every page type missing schema.
- 3
Check for contradictory facts across your site
Inconsistent descriptions of what you do, your location, or your founding year across your homepage, about page and social profiles actively confuse entity recognition.
- 4
Review your content for answer-first structure
Pick five key pages and check whether the core answer to the obvious question appears in the first two sentences, or is buried further down.
- 5
Check your crawlability for AI bots specifically
Review robots.txt for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and OAI-SearchBot, confirming none are accidentally blocked.
- 6
Assess your citation-worthy content depth
Count how many pages contain specific, attributable facts — data, named case studies, dated claims — versus generic marketing copy.
- 7
Score yourself honestly against each category
This audit is diagnostic, not a pass/fail test; the goal is a clear list of gaps to prioritise, not a vanity score.
Pro tips
- Run the entity-clarity test in more than one AI system (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity) — they draw on different data and can give meaningfully different answers.
- Our free GEO Readiness Quiz covers a faster, guided version of this same audit if you want a structured starting point.
